Lockie and Mason strike gold again
David Mason OBE and I enjoyed another perfect-score weekend racing in the Britcar Trophy races supporting the Dunlop 24 Hours at Silverstone. The weather was fantastic and, as ever, the FF Corse prepared and run Ferrari 458 Challenge GTC performed flawlessly.
Qualifying on Saturday morning netted a class pole and P2 overall. The car on pole was the Riley sports prototype Class 1 car which, being about 5 seconds a lap quicker was not in our sights. However, as always, we focussed on our class win.
I took the overall lead at the start of race 1 and opened up a decent gap. Some laps later I came across the class 1 Riley on Wellington Straight. It obviously had a problem and was on its way to the pits. I finished my stint and headed into the pits to hand over to David with a good lead. But was it enough?
The team did a faultless stop and David set off to complete a perfect race with P1 overall and class, fastest lap overall to boot. Smiles all round!!
For race 2 on Saturday morning we had overall pole. The Riley was now back in action and I expected it to come from about 8th on the grid to pass me on the first lap, such was its advantage. And so it was.
As ever we concentrated on our race. I handed over to David and, after a second flawless pit stop from the team, he set off and drove another perfect stint bringing us home P2 overall, P1 in class with fastest lap.
These are the only Trophy races we will do this year so it was great to score 2 class wins, 2 class poles and 2 class fastest laps. The unexpected bonus was an overall win, P2 overall and an overall fastest lap to polish off a perfect week end.
Next races are at the Donington Historic Festival this weekend in some rather different machinery.
