MSA British Dunlop Endurance Championship - The title defence starts

Posted on March 24th, 2015 by

David Mason OBE and I are extremely excited at the prospect of starting our overall and class 2 Britcar Championship Title defence this week end at Silverstone (Mar 28).

We had two wonderful and successful days testing with top UK Ferrari team FF Corse on their annual pre season event at Portimao in southern Portugal two weeks ago in 21C sunny weather. We completed a comprehensive testing schedule and came away from the test feeling positive and confident.

We have a 30 minute qualifying and two 90 minute races at Silverstone with some stiff competition, especially for the coveted overall title.

David's fabulous Ferrari 458 GTC has undergone a comprehensive winter rebuild with FF Corse and the car feel like new. Can't wait!

Double Ferrari podiums at Spa Francorchamps

Posted on June 9th, 2014 by

The Spa Britcar event was blessed with fantastic weather and great racing. Partnering David Mason OBE in the MacConnal Mason Gallery Ferrari 458 GTC, I was really looking forward to being at Spa again. It is a wonderful circuit and even better in the ff Corse prepared and run 458 which did not miss a beat all weekend.

As qualifying approached I was still unsure what sort of time we could expect having had not at speed practice runs. Still I know the circuit well so when the session went green I buckled down and set a 2.30.367 sec lap which put us second in class to the Audi GT3 car and 5th overall! A good result but I felt there was more time to come.

The first race start was hectic with cars going everywhere at La Source. Through it all we got into third place overall and pushing hard. However as we went up Kemel straight the class one cars started to come by with all their power. Coming out of No Name corner a class one Porsche spun and made heavy contact with the barrier spearing back across the track and making everyone take emergency avoiding action. This gave me an opportunity and I dived down the inside of the Audi into Pouhon and then inside the Mosler at Les Fagnes putting me first in class and second overall.

After cycling through the pit stops and a great stint from David we ran out the race in a very credible 3rd in class and 4th overall. This was good for our championship hopes!

The next day saw our second 2 hour race. I started again from 4th on the grid and gave it everything I had. The car was amazing. Off the start I grabbed 3rd and going into Les Combes on the first lap the leading Mosler spun. I was second behind the GT3 Audi and harrying it to see if I could get past. On the second lap I saw an opportunity and swooped down the inside into Les Fagnes to take the overall lead!! Then ensued a real 45 minute dog fight with the faster Audi trying everything to get past. Eventually, as we neared the first scheduled pit stop at about 1 hour my tyres were crying enough and the Audi scrabbled past. Great fun and very clean driving from Frank Pelle.

Again we cycled through our game plan and again finished 3rd in class and overall after another fine stint from David who didn’t put a foot wrong all weekend.

Two good races at amazing circuit left us leading the class championship. However, there is a long way to go with another 8 races to run. So far so good and now we look forward to the next rounds at Oulton Park. Can't wait!!

Round the Rock

I am heading for Rockingham Motor Speedway this week end for the second round of the AMR GT4 series. Really looking forward to getting back into the Aston V8 Vantage: it is a real GT car with good power, fantastic brakes and sounds and looks just right!

Kevin Norville and I tested there  a few weeks ago. It was Kevin's first ever time there and he got to grips with what is generally thought to be quite a tough track very quickly. I think it will suit the car well and look forward to a great result to kick off our championship. Testing on Saturday will give us limited time to reaquaint before a 60 minute race on Sunday and Monday. I would be happy if it was wet, despite the extra time penalty for being an FIA rated driver, as I just love sliding about and feel very comfortable in those conditions.
